Check the MC3470 ( I think that's the number)  chip.  It's the read/write 
amplifier and often goes bad.  If this isn't it I would first check the 
disk to make sure it's not WP and check the write protect switch.  
Sometime, the switch goes bad or gets stuck up. Actually I'df check this 
before the Amp!
