PowerPC GS?
I was just thinking about what would be very nice, and I think it'd be
great if someone would develop a relatively inexpensive PowerPC
compatible motherboard that runs IIGS software. It should have built-in
ports that match up to the back of the IIGS case and the IIGS emulation
built into ROM. Imagine running IIGS (and Mac, DOS, Windoze, and OS/2)
apps at 60-80 MHz on a RISC processor! And then when the PowerPC
specific software became standard, you could STILL run it. It should
also support most Apple peripherals, utilize SIMMs, have built-in high
quality stereo sound capabilities, etc. It should also have the PCI
slots, 3 would be sufficient. They could be mounted on a vertical
daughtercard that plugs into the motherboard so the PCI cards could be
mounted horizontally. Little adaptors would be all that would be
required to bring the connectors on the backs of the PCI cards to match
up with the port holes on the back of the GS case. Imagine that, a
64-bit hardware bus! In fact, such a motherboard could probably also be
crammed into a //e case or something like that! With today's technology,
it's VERY possible. Who knows, a slimmed down version with no PCI slot
capability could also be put into a //c case. It should also be of
reasonably low cost, low enough that it would be a much more economical
option than buying one of those PowerMacs which don't have PCI slots anyhow.
