Many ftp sites use the email information for statistical purposes.
You often see a message about all transfers being logged.
It is also done so they have info on you should you try to obtain
unauthorized access to files on their site (files which should not be
available by anon ftp) or also if you upload commercial software or
viruses to their site.
It is basically a security measure.

ob-apple: if anyone has a list of old apple games which have been ported
to the pc or unix, I would love to get hold of it.
I know there is one for mac. I miss all the old games like archon,
tharolian tunnels, wavy navy etc.
