iigs Rom 1 upgrade unavailable (!?)

A few days ago, I asked a few questions about my new iigs.  I learned from
a couple of you that I have a ROM 0 machine and that I need an upgrade to
ROM 1 (and probably the video chip, too).  I called 800-sos-appl, and
after an eternity on hold, the iigs tech told me that they stopped offering
that upgrade "well over a year ago".  Any chance she was hallucinating?
Perhaps if I go directly to an Apple service center I'll get better 
answers.  Have any of you gotten this upgrade recently?
