Fax software for non-GS Apple II

I have a 128k //c with two 5.25 and 2 Unidisk 3.5 drives, a LineLink
144e modem, and an ImageWriter II.  Lately, I have been thinking of
writing -- or at least attempting to write -- fax software that will
dump the fax directly to the IWII.  I have read the FAQ and other
related info files on the LineLink 144e, and I have also read the fax
FAQ to determine if this undertaking would be feasible.  I am certainly
not a fax expert -- I have written a few programs that follow the rules
for Modified Huffman encoding, but I still lack details.  Nor am I a
telecommunications expert.  But I have the resources to give it a good
shot.  I have read about the IIgs fax software that was never released.
Could I get some constructive input on the possibility/impossibility of
this task?  It sure would be nice to make it work...
