Believe it or not, the 65816 does work in place of a 6502/65c02/65802.
I first heard about it right here on c.s.a2 and didn't believe it
myself at first. To test the validity of this, I took a spare 65816
from a IIgs that was upgraded with a Zip and installed it in a IIe.
The IIe booted up and ran all the programs I tried including 8-bit
Appleworks, Copy II+, Print Shop, etc. I'm not claiming that the
65816 is a 100% functional replacement for the 6502/65c02/65802
(it might or it might not) but it does work and nothing funny
happened during the time I tried it. The pinouts of the two are
almost identical except for a few that are different on the 65816
or are NC (no connection) on the non-65816. If you can't find a
65802 you might want to buy a spare 65816 from a IIgser.
