There is a program out there that is rather old but works pretty good.
Its called GIF3200. It converts GIF to SHR or what ever you like 
including to 3200 pics and does a decent job on them. The only limitation
is that it cannot conver the GIFs to a size bigger then 320x200. If you
have a GIF bigger then that, then it wil you will only get the 320x200
or you can scale it down to what ever you want of off set the picture (gif)
it lets you do that before you convert it. Its pretty  good and thats 
what I use now that Prism is out, that would be the better choise but
if you want freeware, then this is the way to go. I may be at cal tech
but if its not then let me know and I will be more then happe to post it
to the binaries  and or UL to cco,caltech.edu
