Sounds like the daisychain logic board in the 3.5 is blown. That's the little
circuit board that's in the drive that tells it how to talk to drives behind
it on the chain. So it looks like it needs about a $200 repair at a  dealer
or a trip to a mail order repair place, a secondhand replacement for the drive,
or just scare up a 5.25 disk card to put in the machine to run the 5.25 drive.
As for a mail order repair place, I recommend a place called Soft Solutions in
Oregon. They're a Mac only place, but no matter in this case. I called them
about an ailing superdrive and they were nice enough to give me advice on how
to fix it myself for free. You can reach then at 800-264-2530.
