Or better yet, just change the setting in the 'Slots' Control Panel
to disable the drive. If you have any 5.25 drive(s) connected through the
Smartport, set Slot-6 to 'YOUR CARD'. Drives connected via an interface
card (ie, Disk ][), just do the opposite and set slot-6 to the default
'DISK PORT' setting. This way your 5.25 drives no longer grind and endless
scan, and if you have the desire to use them again, just change the slot
setting back and do a warm-boot (Control-OA-Reset). Note that a warm-boot
is required each time the slot settings are changed, otherwise no affect will
take place. Unless you use 5.25 media (8-bit software) on a day-to-day basis,
I suggest *all* IIgs users disable their 5.25 drives! [Changing slot settings
also comes in handy for disabling other hardware that misbehaves -- such as
my RamFast SCSI card until I can afford a hardrive to connect it to! ;-) ]
Actually, having just moved, I haven't even bothered to add my
Apple 5.25 drive when reconnecting the GS! :)
