I dunno. Economy of scale demands that there be a degree of
homogenisation in computer hardware, and most of the serious
components are complex enough that they need entire companies devoted
to just that component. Apple (quite intelligently) repositioned
itself as a software company that does its own hardware and whilst
that transition was very painful for the existing customer base, it
turned out to be a winning strategy long term.

But only after they realized that they had to get onto the same
homogenized hardware base as everyone else, except for the case.  ;-)
