A few people emailed me to ask just exactly what all those files were about
that I posted in the binaries section; RArchive.SHK.
The Road Apple: An Underground Newsletter for Apple Fanatics was a
newsletter started by Al Martin, a (now retired) high school principal from
Portland, OR. It came about because he went to an Apple corporate sponsored
shindig for educators, and got the cold shoulder when he tried to talk about
Apple IIs. He became incensed at the thought of Apple trying to force the
Mac down everyone's throats, and decided to write about it. He didn't stop
for 6 years. I joined him during the first year (I believe issue 4) by
adding some product reviews and techie stuff, as well as my experience in
writing for other politico-inflammatory journals. Together, we lambasted
Apple those six years trying to prevent the inevitable. We choose to beleive
that it's less than coincidental that within weeks after we announced the
final issue, Apple dropped the last of the IIs from their price list.
What'll you find in the archive? Many good rants toward a now lost cause --
continued production of the Apple II series. As well as plenty of neat
techie junk (the RGB fix article was written for that), the history of the
Apple, and some inside insights from others around the II community. More
than anything else, it's a chronicle of how far two hopelessly idealistic
radicals from otherwise opposite ends of the American subcultural spectrum
will go in support of something they consider more than a machine.
