Thanks for the invitation.
This is not directed at anyone, since I have no opinion on any individual,
nor do I have enough information to formulate one: since I was not on
#appleiigs, nor privy to emails; it's more like blowing off steam.
Here is the opinion of a (former) GS user:
Even though I haven't touched my GS in months now (it's sitting in
pieces in my closet right now; though I don't plan on using it anytime
soon, I can't bear to part with it,) I do still monitor all the various
c.s.apple2 newsgroups. Though I was never a programmer, I did, at one
point, thought of myself as somewhat of a "power-user," meaning I
had all the neato toys: ZipGSX 8/64, RamFAST, 6 megs of ram, etc., and
the latest goodies that went into the /FinderExtras folder. I thought
I should at least keep up with the latest gossip, product developments,
etc., plus having spent much of my youth in the Apple II world, the
"fellowship" aspect of c.s.a2 was pretty difficult to leave.
But lately the atmosphere of c.s.a2 has deteriorated and (I think)
increased in negativity, not only for the people who participate in the
discussions, but for those anonymous readers.
Having arguments that originated from #appleiigs spill into the
newsgroup(s) were distracting, disconcerting, and disorienting
(yes, I am using an on-line thesaurus, though not a spell-checker,
nor a grammar checker :). Often I thought "Huh, where the hell
did that come from?" whenever I read a new flame/retraction/accusation/
whatever.
Someone not too long ago pointed out that most, if not all, of the
"technical" edge that the GS had (i.e. the ensoniq chip) no longer
exists, and what remain (still to this date) so attractive about the
GS is that it is fun. Seems to me that this is going away as well.
I supposed if I want to see the latest goodies out for the GS, I can
always hop over to Joseph Lee's place and see his 14/64 zip, gno 2.x.x,
and I'm sure SecondSight too, once it comes out, and whatever new
freeware/demo/shareware releases, but I no longer feel compelled to
reassemble my gs. I wonder how many others are feeling the same way?
Moreover, the flamewars on c.s.apple2 aren't even all that good. If
you really want to read some sarcastic, witty, caustic, and intelligent
posts, I'd recommend comp.os.os2.advocacy, and read the latest debates
between MS FUDders and OS/2 Visionaries (guess which side of the debate
I'm on :)
Anyway, I'm sure my presence (like I had one) wasn't missed, but hell,
Todd invited me :)
