Well, I was speaking purely of 256 color modes. Sure, you can run
1024x768x16 in 512K vram.

The VGA chip can handle 16-bit wide memory, or 32-bit wide memory.
Not 24-bit wide :-)

Yes, the latter, and yes, exsting SHR modes are supported just
by the video emulation.
