first, NEVER use copy II+ on a GS/OS volume... granted, you were just
checking bad blocks and stuff, but in my book, that can lead to trouble -
I've put Copy II+ away on the far side of the room - with the IIe and IIc.

Could be a termination problem...are both your Hard Drives terminated?
(you'll have to look inside to see if the mechanism is terminated itself)
Generally the Apple High Speed SCSI card is robust enough to deal with 
drives that are all terminated, though by the rules, only the LAST drive
in the SCSI chain is supposed to be terminated.

Obviously, since you get the same problem on a different system, the
problem is tied directly to your drive.  I don't think a SCSI ID problem
will act this way, but I'd check it anyway.
