Regarding Net graphics created on higher resolution systems...maybe
we should gather a list of Apple IIGS programs that work best. I'll
add my 2 cents to start off....
SuperConvert can very often produce the best GIF conversions. It
seems that SuperConvert's strongest point is that it often can re-map
large sized graohics so that they display on a single screen. When it
works, it works great. But, every once in a while it offers a choice
of skipping every other scanline.
Recent version of ShowMe display any size GIF graphic, But, if its a
900 x 500 graphic, it will span 3 screen across an 2 or 4 down. It
does a good job, but you have to scroll.
GIF.3200 seems to only capture a small part of the grahic.
I've never seen Prism to see how it works. Is it any good?
My frustration started about a week ago when I visited a friend with
a Mac, and I got to see with my own eyes graphics that I've displayed
on the GS. There was no comparisons.
Source code for GIF is avaailable, and I'd be happy to find it and
make it available if anyone thinks they can come up with a superior
decoder.
On the other hand, Jpeg's seem to produce great graphics, but the
only Jpeg IIGS Jpeg decoder that I'm aware of is lacking due to 2
reasons...it's only grayscale, and there are no conversion possible.
I'd love to be able to download GIF and Jpegs, and then convert them
to a program that can print them. With some of the large size GIF's,
ShowMe will let you save them as AFP, and those can be loaded into
Platinum Paint, and scrolled, but when it comes to printing, you miss
a lot.
I'm jealous. I really want to be able to download graphics from HST
or from volcanoes, and from a zillion other places. As I said before,
90% or more of the graphics I get from the net just aren't "keepers".
Since no real information is being made available about Second Sight,
who knows, maybe when it's released, it'll let me view phenomenal
color images from Hubble Space Telescope.
If not, maybe we should organize a group of net programmers to give
us some tools that will let GS owners have some better tools. I'm not
a programmer, but I'd be willing to help to organize the project. Or,
maybe this is perfect for Phoenix project.
Whatcha think? After all, if an Amiga can have Mosaic, why can't we?
If MacNewbies can show me net graphics that cause my jaw to fall, why
can't one of the GS programming gurus come up with something as
impressive?
Am I dreaming?
