Yeah, it's an AppleWorks 2.0 thing. The only real solution is to upgrade...
It bit me when I bought a CV Tech 4 Meg piggyback card bringing my total
system RAM to 5.25 Meg. I'd load AppleWorks 2.0, and when I'd go to open a
file, it would tell me I had 8 Meg free... and then crash badly, requiring a
cold boot to restart.
They say, that if you create a large enough /ram5 volume, that you can avoid
the bug by not letting AW 2.0 see all your free memory... They are wrong, at
last in my case they were. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, I think the "magic" number is 2 Megs of free Ram or greater. With only
3 Megs total and running 6.0.1, you probably have a AW desktop of <2 Meg, so
you are avoiding the bug.
QC only charged me $99 to upgrade from 2.0 to 4.0...
