ZIP GS technicals

Ok, I know some people are using 74ACT's and some are using 74HCT's whats 
better.  I even know of people using 1 ACT and 1 HCT.

Also whay ACT or HCT would the AC's and the HC's do just a good of a 
job?  the T is just for TTL compatibility, right?

Also, some people out there have info on ASIC modifications.  Zip 
actually sold zips with these for awhile.  What exactly are these mods?  
Speak up, I know it fun to hoard info, but what good does it do you?
