  Hmm.. I just don't see how RF could make that big a difference
(but again, the Zip is just two-layer, so who knows).

  Yes, the 74Fxx chips are the "TTL" (I use the term 'ttl' loosely,
to mean the 74xxx series generically).
  I'm not sure what the pinout is. I have that info at work, I'll
post in a few minutes.
