I used merit/hermes back in the mid to late 80s and recall also setting
IBPC and/or OBPC equal to 8. You may want to try these as well. Also,
merit has a tech sheet which used to be available on-line which explained
what some of the above settings mean (some are obvious, some aren't).
I believe they are available on one of the Univ. of Mich. gophers 
acessible from the Which Host? prompt. Dig around.
