gmail problem... Need more flexible lang.?

I really like this gmail idea... Almost makes me think the ][gs is, like,
compatible with something (or at least acts like it). My problem, however, is
that the language it provides for logging into your remote account isn't
powerful enough to let me do some of the things I need to do. For example,
when I dial my access number from home and connect, the first thing I need
to do is chill for a few seconds to let the connection settle down or
something. I then need to send a couple returns separated by a little time
(all BEFORE I receive anything from the remote system) and then I should
get a DIAL: prompt. Everything from that point on is fine with gmail's
"look for X and then send Y" convention. Getting to that point, however,
is !#$!#$ impossible as far as I can tell. Anybody got any suggestions?
Anybody got any source? Thanks in advance.
