Serial Pro Problems

A friend has a Serial Pro card made by Applied Engineering
which last week started telling ProDOS that the year is
1997. He tried accessing the card's built in control
panel and found that the card had reset itself. No
matter how he set the year i.e., +/- four years from
the present &/or 1997, the card still outputs 1997 as the
year.

The day of the week and month are fine.
The clock works fine.
The serial functions work fine
It is just the year that is wrong.

Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated. (He has tried
both AOL and GEnie and received no responses. Lets see
if the InterNet can do better!)
