The Genie Project? How is it going?

Maybe I have the facts wrong, that wouldn't be surprising. But anyway
I heard that there is a project called Genie to track down the authors
and owners of ancient Apple ][ software and get them to surrender their
rights to the public domain.

Is this true?  And if so, how well is it working?  How many people have
been contacted?  Are they generally willing to help?  Are there many
who are definitely not going to surrender their rights?  

Who/Where would I go to find out the answers to these questions?
