modem problems..help!

I just recenlty acquired all the part I need to get on the net
(modem, extended card, new chips, etc..) for my Apple IIe.
I'm useing Proterm, which I imagine most anyone reading this is
also using.  The problem is it isn't able to init. the modem,
and I;'m not sure why.  It works just fine except on nost
nets it adds extra weird characters to the end of every line-
because I can't set the emulation, because I can't get to that
part of the program I guess.  I can go to ONLINE and it can
dial, but I can't do much else.  The modem I got is not
on the list in Proterm, it's a TELEBIT Trailblazer 2400bd.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  It seems like setting it on 
Generic 2400 should work, but it doesn't.
