Apple II as TDD

I'm told that the Novation AppleCat modem enabled Apple IIs to function as
TDD machines. Right now, I'm putting together a system for my
speech-impaired mother-in-law (please, no jokes! :) using an abandoned
IIe, so we can at least communicate via TTY. 

The AppleCat option, if viable, would help greatly. She doesn't seem to
have trouble with her TDD, but setting up the Apple to communicate takes a
few extra steps. I'm not at all certain she'll be willing to climb that
learning curve. We could bring the IIe back home and teach ourselves TDD
with the AppleCat, again, if that was a viable option.

Anxious to learn anything anyone can offer.
