I'd bet they did this for efficiency. It's quite amazing how quickly
the I/O occurs when walking outdoors in IV and V. They accomplish this
by turning the drive on (so it can come up to speed) BEFORE you reach
the edge of a map segment. By the time you get there, it's ready to
read the sector and the only pause you notice is a fraction of a
second for the drive I/O. If they tried this using files, well, we
all know how slow ProDOS can be opening files....
As I remember, the maps for the outdoors, castles, towns, keeps, and
dungeons were all kept directly on the sectors. Oh, also the intro
screens were packed and stored on the (??) Dwelling disk directly.
I tried to move it to my 3.5" and gave up after a VERY short battle.
I don't even think the 3.5" driver was included in DinkeyDOS anyway.
