Well, they _look_ quite different, for starters.  :-)

Off the top of my head, here are some differences.

The ImageWriter II supports a superset of the ImageWriter I command
set, with one exception: the ImageWriter I has an obscure command for
defining a form layout (Vertical Form Unit).  The ImageWriter II has no
equivalent, but it does have a command for precise vertical positioning.

[I'll use the abbreviations IW1 and IW2 from now on.]

The IW1 only has one character set (font).  The IW2 calls this
"correspondence quality", and adds two more character sets: "draft" and
"near letter quality".  A button on the front panel can select the
font.  There are differences in the printing speed: the IW2 is faster
at printing correspondence quality than an IW1, and the IW2's "draft"
mode is about twice as fast again.

For hardware options, the IW2 supports additional memory, an AppleTalk
(LocalTalk) interface, a sheet feeder and a colour ribbon.  None of
these options are available on an IW1.  The IW2's standard buffer is
larger than the IW1.

There is a wide carriage (15") version of the IW1.  There is no
equivalent for the IW2 (I think the ImageWriter LQ is wide carriage -
I haven't seen one for a while).

The IW2 is heavier than the IW1, and louder.

A few additional commands available on the IW2: half-height,
superscript, subscript, set page length, mousetext printing.  It also
has more options for its downloaded character sets.


There are probably other differences - these are all that I noted in
my brief perusal of an ImageWriter I manual a few years ago.
