This is only a guess, but it may be a problem with bad memory and
not the motherboard. I've had a faulty RAM installed before and had simular
problems and lockups as you described. Do the following to be sure it's
not your memory expansion board that is at fault:

You mentioned having AppleWorks GS. If you have the lastest version
(v1.1) you'll find small program called "MEMORYTEST.CL" on the disk labeled
"Utilities". Launch this program (double-click from Finder) and let it run.
If you have any faulty memory chips on your expansion board, this test will
inform you. If this is the case, then replacing the bad chips or the memory
card should solve your problems. If OTOH, the test reports your card is
fine, let us know...

>I've run the self diagnostic test and it comes up system good???

The built-in diagnostic routines in your IIgs (CTRL-OPTION-OA-RESET)
only test the RAM on the motherboard (256k on the ROM 01 / 1.125mb on ROM 3).
Anything in the memory expansion slot is ignored. The test reporting 'System
Good' further makes me suspect it's faulty RAM and not the motherboard. Another
thing I recommend you trying, is removing your memory card and try booting
AppleWorks Classic (8-bit, not GS). Does it now load without freezing or
locking up?
