would these be 1.2 meg 5.25" disk and 1.44 meg 3.5" disks? the gs drives
don't like those even when reformatted to 140K and 800K. the drives may be
fine, the disks might be the problem.
or your smartport could be fried. a buddy had a gs that wouldn't work
with a 3.5" drive yet the drive worked fine on his mac classic.
