Deskjet 500C/GS

I am trying to help someone with a DeskJet 500C that is connected to a IIGS.
The cable in question works with a deskjet 500, so we know the connections
and cable are fine.  He is using the harmony drivers.

The printer will advance the paper to the top, then the busy light flashes,
and nothing gets done. We have tried this with AppleWorks 4 (using deskjet
500 printer option), ShadowWrite (using Harmony drivers) and basic, through
a pr#1 and print statements.

The only time we have been able to get this printer to work is for the
self test (holding down the load/eject button while turning on the power),
and this only works with the black ink.  When we had a color cartridge, the
self test only gave one line (The sloping line w/ the numbers 1-48)
