I had this same thing happen to me too.  There is conflict with
one of your Inits, Fexts, Cdevs, or DAs.  I never narrowed it down
to which one (I think it is the Extended Keyboard Init--it is only
one I have which intercepts key strokes).  My solution is to
shift-boot and that took care of the trick.  You can also click the
mouse very quickly in the center of the screen after typing the
last character of the password and you can then enter that level.
