More questions...
Response to my last round of questions has been great. Thanks. Now
I've got a bunch of new questions to ask though.
What is a reasonable price for a ROM 03 gs with no frills these days? Is
there any sort of average or is it just completely arbitrary? (Does anyone
have a spare IIgs they want to sell? I'm looking for a basic one to strip
and rebuild from the ground up ;)
Here's what I'm planning on doing with this thing once I get it - if you'd
care to take a look and tell me if you see any problems - that'd be great
(I'm very PC proficient, but lost most of my Apple know-how when I gave
up the old II+).
I currently have a PC-style tower case w/250 watt power supply, a LD 5.25"
PC floppy drive, a HD 3.5" floppy drive, and a 160 MB SCSI Hard Drive - none
of which are being used by my PC. So, I'd like to find a IIgs, remove the
guts and transfer them to the tower case. The case is much larger than a
IIgs case so I'll have to fasion new mounts. I'm also assuming that the
power supply's of an Apple and a PC are completely different so I'll be
moving the Apply supply too. I'd like to use the existing PC power supply
to power the drives and peripherals - that way I can keep everything
internal rather than have a lot of different boxes sitting around.
I'll have to buy the card that allows the Apple to use PC disk drives.
Can anyone give me information on this, like what it's called - who
distributes it?
I'll want a RAMFast SCSI card for the Hard Drive - are these still made?
If so, who sells them?
Re: Zip accelerators. I was told ther is a FAQ about hacking them to get
speeds to satisfy the techie geek in me. Anyone know where this FAQ is
kept - I checked several FTP sites with no success. If not, I gather
what is required is a change of OSCMOD to a higher speed and (?) a change
of processor. Are Zips still made? I found a phone number for Zip Tech.
so at least I know where to find one if they still exist.
Is a particular Ram card more recommendable than others? I'll probably
look into getting a four MB card since no one seems to think I'll have any
need for 8. Are there any 4 meg cards that are later upgradeable to 8?
While I'm at this. I have apprx. 180 disks of Apple software that I kept
when I sold my old Apple. It's all dos 3.3. Will I be able to put these
on a hard drive (assuming they're not self-booting, of course)?
Thanks again, I'll probably be back with more questions soon :).
