It's a good thing I'm in a good mood now, or I might say some nasty
things about people who don't know what they're talking about....

Not!
The amount of data that is transferred per second is more of a
function of what type of machine it's connected to.

I'd quote from the owner's manual, but I can't find it.  But from
memory, I think a //e maxes out at about 512k/sec, while a GS maxes
out at about 1MB/sec.

Changing the cache size just makes things run a little faster.  (More
specifically, the larger the cache is, the less often the computer
will have to go to the disk for the information - with a few
exceptions.)
