Deskjet 550C to AppleIIgs

Hi!  I wonder if anyone could help my Mom.  She is getting custody of all
the IIgses at the high school where she teaches.  She wants to hook up a
DeskJet 550c to one of them.  The sales person she talked to swore up and down
that it was totally impossible to hook a 550c up to an "Apple" because
"the commands were different."  And that she would need to order a custom
cable from someplace in Arlington.  Could someone out there who is using a
DeskJet, or knows someone who is using a deskjet send me instructions (one
syllable or less please :) on what all I would need to do to make it work
with a IIGS?  I assume that I would need the appropriate driver from Vitesse
to make it work under 6.01, but is it possible to make it work from AppleWork 4?
or 3?  Do I need some sort of esoteric parallel to serial converter and a
custom cable?  I know it can be done, but I'd be more comfortable with
testimoney from experts that my dear sainted Mother could use to fend off the
sales types.  Thanks a whole lot.  Oh, and if you would, please reply via
e-mail, I'm currently trying to whip my thesis into a semi-presentable state
and my newsreading is lagging sadly behind.
