gs "rainbows"
In reply to Andrew Volks inquiry on
GS/OS multicolored "snow," I have the same
problem. So far, I am assuming
this has been happening because I am running
a GS with way too little ram (It's a rom 1
IIE conversion to GS with 256k original and
a 1.5 meg card adding up top 1.75 megs -- also
a 40 meg internal vulcan).
So far, I have assumed that if I can get my paws
on a 4meg ram card, these problems may stop.
I have been pushing the machine to it's limits
and suffer HD crashes on a regular basis.
I have found that trashing files helps get rid
of the "rainbows" sometimes.
You can use an 8 bit copy program to back up important
files to disk, but NEVER use one to delete files from
a HD (especially copy2+, which goes nuts with resource
files, even if you're not touching them!)
Trash from the finder if you can -- split up your
directories -- change things around.
It also helps to put your most active (that is, changeable)
directories on a different (higher, preferably) volume than your
applications, which don't change as much.
Cut down on your fonts a bit if you can! Ask yourself, "do I
REALLY need
that font all the time?" and if the answer is no, then move 'em
OUT of
/System/Fonts and into some storage area until you want 'em.
Hope this helps
