Yes, you can do that, though you may not want to with an LC if you
still want to use the LC for other things. The cheapest method I know
of (and the one I used for my own setup) is to buy (or make) some
phone-net connectors and use standard telephone wire. If you build your
own connectors (from plans available in various places), you'll need to
make sure all systems involved are on the same ground. If you buy
connectors (from Farallon, Focus, etc.) you should be able to get them
for $15-$20 each and you won't need to worry as much about the ground.
I've also heard it said that it is possible to link just using an
imagewriter cable, but I can't substantiate this claim.
On the Mac you'll need to turn on Appletalk from the Chooser and File
Sharing from the File Sharing Setup control panel. You'll also need to
create yourself a user ID in the Users & Groups control panel. On the
IIgs side you'll have to have all the relevant Appleshare files loaded
(CDEVS, drivers, etc.) Once this is all done, you should be able to
link volumes from your Mac with no problems.
I've done this on occasion between my accelerated Mac Plus and my
accelerated IIgs for transferring *large* (>800K) files.
Another point to mention is that the built-in file sharing of System 7.X
only allocates a maximum of 50% of the CPU for networking. There is a
PD or Shareware product available that will enable you to change that in
increments of 10%. If you'd like more information or feel the need to
flame me for anything I've said, please do it in E-mail.
