As for the networking part, any PC clone will do. You have 2 choices, one
which is coming in the fall. This one is Copstalk. It's a Windows' product
that exist now  as a client to Appleshare. The server part will come later
this year. It's a very nice product. Another alternative might be something
like Coactive Connection which provides System 7-like server/client AFP
volumes ( and printing) via the parallel port and PhoneNet. Or get a NeXT
PC and put uShare on.
 
It seems to me that one doesn't want to be blind to the alternatives, 
including improving your GS.
