You're opening your Mac SE/30, and the modem comes on automatically eh?
Gee, you shouldn't have your modem connected to the SE/30 or have the SE/30
on when you open it up.  About the only thing you can do inside an SE/30
is add more memory, and that is very hard to get to.  So you have to
'double-clikc' on quit to shut it off.  Hmmm I think I know what's going on
here.  You've opened up your Mac one too many time with it on and got a big
jolt of juice when you busted off the end of the tube.

About the modem problem though.  It's hard to say, since I don't have
THE MODEM.  I've got three different modems, and I don't think any of them 
are THE MODEM compatible.

Seriously though, post this to the Mac comm group with a lot more info on
what type of modem and software you are using.
