Help! I can't get large italic fonts

   i don't know when it started, but i can't get italic fonts
in any font (unless it's a TT Italic Font) in any program when
the font size is over 75 or so.  this means if i have a 24 pt
font on-screen in italics (ok so far), when it prints it comes
out non-italicized (at 300 dpi hpdj500, 24 -> 96 pt).  
   the problem exists in System 6.0 or System 5.0.4, with
Pointless v2.0.3 or v1.0 or no Pointless, with TrueType or bit-mapped
fonts.  if i try to create a large font on-screen the italics 
don't show up (just the non-italicized characters).  it seems 
like QD is not italicizing large fonts when it is requested to do 
so.  i have 8Mb DRAM, Ramfast SCSI.  i re-installed sys6 to no 
avail, even with shift-booting.  Bold and outline work though.  
what is the deal?
