CPU (I'm terrified of cracking the PLCC socket!) or the crystal yet,
so the cache is a good start.

The crystal is socketed though, so what's the best way to safely pull
the old 65816 out of the PLCC socket?

There are PLCC chip pullers designed expressly for removing such
chips from their sockets safely. They typically grab the chip by
diagonally opposite corners and pull straight up.
