  You can get 2400 baud external modems for < $40 now days. Quality
Computers (800-777-3642) sells these.

  You need a serial card.. Sequential Systems makes the SuperComm
card, a low-cost clone of Apple's serial interface. 800-759-4549,
with special educational pricing.
