Hmm: Translation from IIe to Mac

OK, I have this big file (a novel) that was written on an Apple IIe using
AppleWriterII, and saved on 5.25" disks.  

I would like to translate it into 3.5" disks and WordPerfect or some other
viable program, so that when we throw out the IIe soon we'll still be able
to get at the novel. 

Can anyone advise me on how to do this? I have access to a Mac with both a
5.25" drive and a 3.5" drive. 

-->Already tried:
Ran Apple File Transfer on that Mac, but it didn't recognize the logical 
structure of the Apple IIe disks. (Can anyone recommend a file transfer 
program that might enable to Mac to recognize my disks?)
