Thanks, and thanks to those who sent me mail.  After checking the
Info from the finder, I found out that my _hard drive_ had the
mysterious SCSI ID of 0.  It seemed that the scsi ID switch on the
back wasn't connected to the drive mechanism.  With another turn of
great luck, I managed to break off one of the jumper pins on the 
drive.  I powered up anyway, and the HD was now SCSI id 2.  AFter
turning the CD-ROM to ID 1, everything works perfectly!
