I seem to remember long ago (pre System 6) someone had a patch that
would allow spaces. It merely allowed the period to be made lowercase
and translated it to a space. All applications could still use the file
by having you use the capital version (the period) where there was a
space.
I'd be happy with ProDOS 8 just being able to display all filenames as
GS/OS sees them, including when from BASIC.System you CATALOG a file
server (with the limitation of no non-ascii characters (TM, (C), etc.)).
