I have a manual for the grappler +. The switches are as follows:

ids/dataproducts switch settings do not matter
when the + side of the switch isdepressed, or set to the right, the switch
is in the on position.
* switch 1 controls the MSB (most significant bit, or 8 data bit.
when the switch is in the on position (+) the MSB is NOT transmitted to the
printer. when the switch is in the off (-) position, the MSB is under software
control.
