Serial cable length limit?

I was just wondering if there is any length limit on a serial cable going 
from a computer to printer.  Now that I got a GS, I had to move my IIc 
across the room.  Would it be possible to run a 20' cable to a switch box 
by the printer so I could still print from the IIc?  Also, anybody know 
of a good source for a switch box with mini-din 8 connectors on it?
