It seems as though you hit the nail on the head. Although there is a
joystick connected, I never use it, so I forgot it was buried under some 
things and they began pushing one of the buttons.. and of course when
I removed all of the cards from the slots, having forgotten about the 
joystick, I forgot to remove its plug..

Thanks for your help! You saved me from the cost of a new motherboard
that would have run anywhere from $175 to $295 depending on where it
was obtained (with the old one in exchange)...
