Have you tried cleaning the print head? With the printer OFF, the ribbon OUT,
and the printhead near the middle, press the plastic wedge-shaped finger just
behind the print head to one side, then pull the printhead cartridge straight
up and out. Then, you can soak the business end of the head in alcohol for a
while (and get lots of purple gunk out). Dab it clean with a tissue, perhaps
carefully (!) scrub the face of the printhead with a toothbrush. Others have
suggested applying a drop of light machine oil to the pins after cleaning with
alcohol, but I never have. Sometimes this clears enough gunk out of the head
to let the pins move more freely, thus improving the print quality, and giving
you back your comma tails and descenders.
If that fails, perhaps you should consider printhead replacement (now that you
know how to do it! 8-})
(I won't suggest the OBVIOUS solution to "prints too light" 8-)...but it DOES
have something to do with the ribbon 8-} )
