If it is an appletalk connection, phone line and PhoneNet connector kits
work nicely.  Use the existing phone jacks if there.  Line 1 for the phone
uses the two inner wires of the phone jack.  Appletalk can use the outer
two.  (Yes Appletalk uses only two wires!).

If it is a serial or parallel connection, you have problems.  40 feet is
beyond the specs with a signal repeater installed, plus it will take 3 to 7
wires for serial connection, and more than 8 for a parallel connection.

Go with appletalk for networking, not serial or parallel.
