You might be referring to a program called XINU. It is an Apple II
UNIX clone hailing from Down Under.
I don't know too much about it except that it was posted to comp.-
binaries.apple2 a little while ago by (correct if I am wrong, PLEASE!)

It also had certain restrictions for the type of machine that it could
be run on, but I can't recall the details. The poster had hoped that
someone would undertake the task of removing those restrictions.
