Re: FTP on Apple II
Let me tell you what I do at work quite a lot.
We have Macintoshes here at work which we use to log in to the main
system via Telnet. My suggestion is to find such a system, download
your files to it, put them on Apple formatted 3.5" disks, and take
them home. Not only would it be faster, but it would probably be
a lot easier.
But if you want to log in to your system from home, then forget FTP.
Use Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem, or Kermit. Almost every system in the
world supports Kermit. But Kermit is slow. If you thought 1200
baud was slow - wait until you attempt to transfer a file using Kermit
on a 1200 baud system. Xmodem is a great improvement, Ymodem even
better, and Zmodem is the best for transferring files from a larger
computer to a micro.
So why forget FTP? Mainly because FTP was designed to move information
across large bandwidth, high speed lines. It is not a modem program
but rather an Ethernet program. Since (I'm assuming you don't have an
Ethernet line installed in your house) you are probably using a modem,
trying to use FTP with that modem is like trying to get milk from a
bull. You might get something from the bull, but it's not going to
be milk. :P
I think on small files, using Kermit would be ok. For larger files
though, I'd find a computer there at work to download to. :)
I hope this help. :)
